If you’re looking for a premium vehicle GPS navigation system, one with text-to-speech and the ability to gather real-time traffic information, the StreetPilot 2720 is the answer. In addition to the turn-by-turn voice-prompted navigation available in earlier StreetPilot models, the 2720’s text-to-speech functionality allows the unit to audibly announce the names of upcoming streets and points of interest, letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. At the heart of the 2720 is a new control system that features a widescreen, automotive-grade touchscreen display that automatically dims and brightens based on ambient light conditions. Meanwhile, an integrated dash-mounting system provides easy adjustment and quick release, or you can use the included “bean bag” mount if you don’t want to add a mount to your dash. An included speaker attachment that is built into the 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter enables the 2720 to deliver voice prompts. An internal antenna that communicates with up to 12 GPS satellites is provided, as is a USB port for PC connectivity. There’s also an MCX-type connector for hooking up an optional external GPS antenna. And if you need waterproofing, the 2720 is up to the challenge; it meets IEC 60529 IPX7 standards, which means it’s submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
Finding your way with the 2720 starts with inputting a location on the touchscreen. Next, the unit’s text-to-speech feature speaks to you just like a back seat driver, telling you the names of streets and when to turn and in what direction. And if you happen to miss a turn, don’t worry–the 2720 automatically calculates a new route to your destination. In addition to point-to-point navigation, the 2720 can calculate the most efficient route between multiple destinations–a real time-saver for realtors, salespeople, and errand-runners. You can also tell the unit to avoid specific areas or road segments when calculating a route. You can also select a three-dimensional mapping perspective, or choose from several 2-D overhead viewing options. What’s more, audible and visual navigation instructions and warnings help you navigate more quickly while keeping your eyes on the road.
Another time- and frustration-saving feature of the 2720 is the database of preloaded maps and points of interest. Gone are the days of uploading partial maps from your computer to your GPS device: the 2720 has them all built in. The unit comes preloaded with Garmin’s highly detailed MapSource City Navigator NT North America maps of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Finding points of interest along your route is made easy with the 2720’s huge built-in database of nearly six million hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin has also made it easy for users to upload custom points of interest–now you can add school zones or safety cameras to your database. You can even turn on a proximity alert to notify you of upcoming custom points of interest.

Garmin really kicks the power of the 2720 up a notch with the addition of real-time traffic information. This optional service will display congested areas on a color-coded map, allowing you to avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that calculates a new route. All this wizardry is made possible by the new Garmin GTM 10 receiver that connects to the 2720 and other select Garmin products. Note that while the GTM 10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe, these traffic services are available only in select cities where coverage exists. The service requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and, in some cases, a subscription to enable these traffic capabilities.

Garmin Edge 605 Bicycle Computer and GPS Navigator
Garmin has really upped the ante on the entire cycling computer category with it’s two new gps-enabled navigator/computers, the 705 and its younger sibling, the 605. These are true navigational aids with full-color maps and turn-by-turn directions in addition to advanced route-planning and saving capabilities. On top of that, the 705 adds heart rate and cadence monitors, a barometric altimeter, and wireless capability that lets you share routes and workout data with other riders instantly. No more scratch paper paper-clipped to your handlebars. In addition to their cycling computer functions, The Edge 705 and 605 provide the same robust navigation as Garmin’s vehicle navigators, with turn-by-turn spoken directions (turn left in 500 yards) and a 2.2-inch (diagonal) color display that shows maps in great detail. Both devices come pre-loaded with a built-in basemap, and a MicroSD card slot you can use to load new maps or store workout, course and ride data. Garmin has lots of street and topographic maps available for purchase and you can download courses and rides from Garmin or other riders at the Garmin Connect website. Both feature a high-sensitivity receiver that holds a signal under trees and near tall buildings and have a click stick for easy screen navigation.Connectivity and “ANT + Sport” One of Garmin’s most ambitious decisions has been to approach fitness devices as a total platform with their “ANT + Sport” connectivity system. All of Garmin’s new fitness devices, including the Edge 605 and 705, the Forerunner 50 heart rate monitor watches, will interface wirelessly with any devices that are compatible wiht the “ANT + Sport” protocol, including devices from other manufacturers. Currently, Garmin the devices will pair with power meter from SRM or Quarq to measure power – torque and cadence for each leg at the pedals – which is often cited as a true indicator of an efficient ride. It’s unclear what other manufacturers will buy into the ANT + Sport platform, but this kind of open connectivity with products from other companies offers a great deal of potential flexibility. The wireless function also makes it easy to connect one Edge unit to another to share rides, courses and workout data. Heart Rate and Cadence Monitors The Edge 705 heart rate monitor uses a robust wireless technology that eliminates cross-talk and interference and delivers real-time heart rate data exclusively to the user’s device. This data is stored with each track point for post-workout analysis. The Edge 705 with speed/cadence sensor incorporates a self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor that mounts to the rear chain stay of the bicycle. Be Part of A Community In 2007, Garmin acquired Motion-based, the largest shared repository of customer-generated gps-based routes, courses and maps. This was a significant move for Garmin to support the gps user community and bring a wealth of route options to gps users. The nüvi 250 is built with a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 3.8 x 2.8 x .8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 5.2 ounces. The nüvi 250’s 3.5-inch (diagonal) display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.
